REFLECTOR: Sheet Wax Glassing Technique

Another builder called and asked about some of the techniques I learned from
Malcolm Collier (Hangar 18). I had to replace 3 windows in my Velo (except
for doors). Something I had never seen is the use of adhesive wax sheets
that can be formed to any complex curves, inside or outside of the plane. We
used it on the outside of my window openings (after cutting out the windows)
to create a new glass "window frame." In my case, there was a lot more to it
than simply making a frame, but this allowed us to insert the new windows
from the inside of the cockpit, and make them totally flush with the outside
skin. Cost for wax is economical, it's versatile, and can also be used to
form many parts. I helped a Bearcat builder create a complicated shape
(engine intake air box) for his for his engine. We glassed over the wax and
then removed it. Took us 30 minutes. It was much faster than carving foam
because of the complex shapes.
