REFLECTOR: Franklin Alternator

Mike,

Our planes must be pretty close. I weigh 180# and if I do a W&B with 75# at the co-pilot position my CG is 119.8. I fly solo with no weight added up front and am still within the CG envelope. This puts me close to the aft CG but not beyond. The advantage is that I get reduced ground roll on take-off.

My battery is an Optima spiral cell, 65 Amp/hr, 45 pound monster (CG helper). It too spins the prop real lively.

Larry,

I'm really not that close. Flying alone, and with 75 lbs. in three leather bags of
shotgun lead (25 lbs each) under the co-pilot seat, my cg is 119.5. My airframe
was built very light, the problem is the weight of the Franklin engine and accessories
back there. It's a good thing that the IVO prop is very light.

Yesterday, I replaced my concord battery with a Odyssey PC 1200 mj so that
added 4 lbs to the arm at 28 inches. The Odyssey spun the engine so fast I
thought it was idling.

  Mike,

I ran a W&B and 4# at the alternator arm moved the CG 0.1" aft. If you're that close don't ever fly naked.

  Thanks John,

I got an 70 amp Mitsubishi alternator out of a late model Honda, it fits perfectly but it's 4 lbs
heaver than the one have. My CG is too far aft as it is, I hate to add more weight back there.
Was looking for a lighter alternative.

BTW: a couple of years ago, I remember you made a post asking if you reduced
the space between the top of your arm pit scoop and the wing from 1 inch to 1/2
inch, if it would pump more air into the plenum.

Did you reduce the area and did it reduce your CHT's ???

    Mike,

Mine is belt driven. Seems like it shouldn't be hard to find one that fits.

Posted this before but go no replies, thought I'd post again.

My engine was purchased from Atlas Motors and came with a 35A
alternator. Now that I have installed dual GRT HX EFIS, the little
alternator is just not up to the task.

B&C Dose not make an alternator to fit the Franklin.
Which alternator are you Franklin drivers using.

    PS. 60 ~ 70 Amps.
