It's in your operating limits. The standard FAA language, and the EAA's
position, are:

(28) The pilot in command of this aircraft shall notify air traffic control
of the experimental nature of this aircraft when operating into or out of
airports with an operational control tower. When filing IFR, the
experimental nature of this aircraft shall be listed in the remarks section
of the flight plan.

EAA Position: FAR 91.319(d)(3) states that ATC must be notified "of the
experimental nature" of the aircraft when operating at airports with
operating ATC Control Towers. When filing IFR (or VFR) place the appropriate
experimental aircraft contraction in the remarks block of your flight plan -
which is located in FAA Order 7340.1, Contractions, Chapter 5 (just look up
your aircraft, i.e., Vans - RV3), if your aircraft is not listed use the
generic designators located in Table 5-3

See http://members.eaa.org/home/govt/issues/samateur_built_operating.asp?

I usually use "experimental Velocity" the first time I call ATC, then just
"Velocity" after that.

Glenn

Subject: REFLECTOR: ATC Question

Since we are talking about what to use when filing, I thought I'd ask about
what to use when speaking to ATC. If VELO is good to go for filing, can a
Velocity pilot use "Velocity, (tail numbers)" when first contacting ATC
instead if "Experimental, (Tail numbers)"? Does anyone use both "Velocity"
and Experimental" when first contacting ATC? Does the word "Experimental"
need to be in all transmissions with ATC or can it just be in the first
transmission, if it is needed at all?
